Emmaus Björkå – Together for a better world
Emmaus Björkå is a solidarity organization funded in 1965 in the village Björkå but is now based in Gothenburg. The second handactivities are carried out in the southwest of Sweden. We are a member of Emmaus Sweden, Emmaus Europe and Emmaus International. Emmaus Björkå is a politically and religiously independent association. Nevertheless, we take a stand politically, and our activities are based on socialist values. Our members and employees work in many different ways for solidarity, sustainability, democracy, pluralism and human rights – both in Sweden and in other countries.
Support the struggle against occupation
Emmaus Björkå is committed to eliminating the causes of poverty, with a focus on the struggle against occupation. Currently we support the struggle for a free Palestine and Western Sahara. We support organizations that work politically to bring an end to the occupations, as well as advocacy work in Sweden.
We also take social responsibility providing meaningful employment and a workplace for people outside the labor market.
Emmaus Björkå work together with several municipalities in western and southern Sweden. Through these partnerships, we employ around 250 people in daily activities and social projects. In this way people in need of assistance can also assist others. Everyone is needed in the work for solidarity.
The textile industry has a huge impact on the environment, mainly in countries with water scarcity. It takes about 2,700 litres of water to produce a plain t-shirt, and approximately 11,000 liters of water for a pair of jeans. Only one of six items of clothing is recycled in Sweden. The rest are discarded. Emmaus Björkå collects about 3,000 tonnes of clothes and 1,000 tonnes of gadgets each year. By collecting and reusing them we save equivalent to more than the average year emissions of 16000 cars!
What we support
The surplus of Emmaus Björkå goes to solidarity and development programmes.
Sweden – Material and financial support to organisations working for the rights of undocumented refugees.
Nicaragua – Support to a democracy programme for young women and men.
Palestine – Economic support to Palestinian organisations and refugee camps in Lebanon.
Western Sahara – Occupied by Morocco since 1975. We ship shoes to the refugee camps in Algeria, and give financial support to the liberation movement Polisario.
